Take Care: New Work by Hannah Bennett

The exhibition Take Care: New Work by Hannah Bennett is made-up of thirteen reduction woodcuts created by printmaker Hannah Bennett between November 2015 and January 2016. Reduction printing involves meticulous planning on the part of the printmaker. First, the background is cut into a block of wood. Then, the block is inked, and that portion of the image is printed before other forms are carved away from the block and new colours can be introduced to the print. Artist Pablo Picasso is credited with the invention of this methodology, using linoleum blocks instead of wood.
Bennett’s work often reflects fluctuating societal conditions. Particular locations, art historical references and other allusions to pop culture, such as children’s books, YouTube videos, instructional manuals, news images and Internet memes, inform Bennett’s work. A graphic quality which relies heavily on the interplay of positive and negative space is enthusiastically rendered here in the bold process of reduction woodcut.
Hannah Bennett is an artist based in Langley, BC. She graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley in 2011 and is an associate member of Malaspina Printmakers and Dundarave Print Workshop on Granville Island. She also instructs printmaking workshops throughout the Lower Mainland.
